Brent Sedo became hooked on horse racing and life on the backstretch when he was very young through a school friend whose father trained a couple horses at Assiniboia Downs. Together they would pool their money and make $2 quinella bets (the rules on underage betting at the track being a bit lax in those days) hoping to win enough to each buy a burger and fries and have enough left over for bus fare to get home. Since then he has attended races in five different countries on four different continents including Churchill Downs in Kentucky, Newmarket Race Course in England, Flemington Race Course in Australia, and the Hipidromo in Santiago, Chile, where fans bring their own wine and cheer every race like it’s the Kentucky Derby. He also saw the great Cigar run his very last race at the 1996 Breeders’ Cup at Woodbine in Toronto. Getting to the races at Saratoga in New York is on his “to-do” list for the summer of 2019. He studied journalism at university and has worked in print and online publishing as a writer and editor for more than 25 years.
